Virent Energy and Shell are Planning to Research New Biofuels

Virent Energy Systems and Shell collaborate for one year on the research, to suggest converting plant sugars into gasoline, giving it a clear preference over ethanol.Shell say no to ethanol, and Virent aim to develop will be able to run in existing vehicles without the need to modify their engines.
Using catalysts biomass derived feed stocks Virent want to transform plants sugars into hydrocarbon molecules. These molecules carry better fuel efficiency because have more elevated energy content than ethanol.Required sugars are: switch grass, sugarcane pulp, wheat straw and corn stovers
This technology would be improved upon to ensure large degree commercial production.Virent and Shell gave no targets for achieving commercial production of the new fuel and did not say the amount they are investing in the project.
